Action without discussion is dangerous. Discussion without action is futile.
Lawsuit - Settled
On February 25, 2004, settlement was reached in the civil suit for violation of constitutional Equal Protection filled by Atheist Anonka and her daughter Tammra in US District Court, Bay City, Michigan - Anonka and Tammra Jocham vs. Tuscola County & Tuscola County Board of Commissioners, E. District of Michigan, Northern Division, Case NO 01-CV-10385.

An order from US Federal District Court Judge David M. Lawson prevents parties in the suit from discussing money details of the settlement. However the court did order a public apology from Tuscola County Board of Commissioners in Caro, Michigan as part of the settlement. That apology was released March 23, 2004. It reads:

Tuscola County Board of Commissioners
207 E. Grant Street, Caro, Michigan 48723
Telephone: 989-672-3700

We express regret that out statements made at the December 11, 2001, meeting of the Tuscola County Board of Commissioners offended Anonka or caused her embarrassment or hardship. We understand that our citizens should be welcome to express their views on matters of public concern.

(Signature on Original)
Norma Bates, 12/11/01, Chairperson
Tuscola County Board of Commissioners

That public statement was drafted by US District Court Judge David M. Lawson
(Bay City, Michigan)

Though we cannot claim 'pure victory,' as the case was settled before going to jury, the settlement does set an example for Atheists freedom of speech and Equal Protection rights.

This settlement ends Michigan Atheists 3 year vigil in Tuscola County. The complete story remains on my web site www.michiganatheists.org and I encourage you to review it. Beyond that, an independent film maker began interviewing numerous people and documenting this Michigan historical event from its inception several years ago. That documentary production will be released in a few months and I will keep you informed as to how to purchase this movie.
